Wanaka is one of my favourite places to stay in New Zealand – epic hikes, a beautifully still lake, and a lot more tranquility than nearby Queenstown. This guide covers all the best campgrounds in Wanaka, from free spots to premium options. There is something here for every budget.

Premium Glamping Options

If you want a bit of luxury while staying in the area, I would recommend Cross Hill Glamping. It is around 15 minutes drive from Wanaka on Lake Hawea and features some pretty amazing glamping domes.

Budget-Friendly Campgrounds

If you want to stay in a more central location, I would recommend staying at Tasman Holiday Parks- Wanaka. It features some great facilities and it’s only a short walk to the town centre and the famous Wanaka Tree.

Luggate Campground is a more budget friendly spot at $10 per person per night. It is well reviewed and has toilets, running water and $2 coin-operated showers.

If you prefer a spot with better views that’s closer to some of the famous hikes like Roy’s Peak and Rocky Mountain Summit, then go to Hampshire Holiday Parks- Glendhu Bay. It’s located on the shore of Lake Wanaka. Of all the campgrounds in Wanaka, this was my favourite as it was clean, calm and in a great location. We didn’t have to travel far to access these insane views…

Free Camping Spots

Sadly, you can’t stay overnight on the banks of Lake Wanaka – parking officers there are diligent with checking most nights and will hand out fines to people parked overnight. In fact, the closest Freedom Camping spot to Wanaka is the Red Bridge Reserve– it’s a 15 minute drive from Wanaka itself. There is space for 50 vehicles and you can stay for up to 2 nights.

We didn’t stay there as we didn’t have a self-contained car but I have heard that it is a relatively decent place to stay as long as you don’t mind all things basic. On that note, if you’re not sure if you need a self-contained vehicle, check out my Campervan Buying Guide. At Red Bridge Reserve, there are 2 long drop toilets but no running water/showers. Please note, this campsite often fills up in the afternoon so make sure to arrive early to ensure you get a spot.

If you decide to stay at Red Bridge Reserve and still want to shower, your best bet is to go to the nearby Luggate Campground. They have new facilities and it costs $2 for a 5 minute shower.

General advice for campgrounds in New Zealand

Although Campermate is great for giving detailed info for all the campsites in New Zealand, don’t forget to also check out booking.com as with the Genius Discounts, you could get your stay at a campsite or holiday park cabin for a reduced rate.

If are in New Zealand for a while and you plan on staying in many DOC (Department of Conservation) Campsites, make sure to get the Campsite Pass. Most people make their money back within the first few weeks so it’s well worth the investment.

If you are on a road trip through New Zealand, you will need to regularly fill up on Fuel. The cost of Petrol can be expensive in New Zealand so make sure to download the Gaspy app and compare prices in different locations.
