Te Anau to Milford Sound: The Ultimate Road Trip Guide
The road from Te Anau to Milford Sound is widely considered one of the most beautiful drives in New Zealand, and after doing it twice, I completely understand why. I’ve genuinely had travellers tell me the sheer beauty of the scenery brought them to tears. This guide will go through everything you need to know, including the best photo stops and Cruise companies to go with.
I have travelled from Te Anau to Milford Sound twice in my lifetime: in 2019 and 2026. Each time, I experienced different weather and I concluded that this is one of the few places in the world where the rain can heighten your experience! Milford Sound may be the destination, but the drive there is an attraction in its own right. Every few kilometres there’s another viewpoint, waterfall or alpine valley that’s worth stopping for.
Things to know before your trip from Te Anau to Milford Sound
- Distance: 120 km (75 miles)
- Driving time: 2 hours without stops (but allow around 4 hours)
- Fuel: Fill up in Te Anau
- Mobile signal: Very limited after leaving Te Anau so download an offline map (maps.me)
- Roads: Winding and often wet and slippery (it rains around 200 days each year)
- Toilets: Limited after Te Anau but they are found at the Milford Sound Visitor Centre

Hollyford Valley Lookout
How long to spend here: 5 minutes
Parking: Small roadside parking area
Walk to Viewpoint: Very short walk to the viewing platform
Top Tips: There are two parking areas right next to each other so don’t worry if the first car park is full.
Monkey Creek
How long to spend here: 10 minutes
Parking: Roadside parking available
Walk to Viewpoint: Short walk to the creek
Top Tips: One of the best spots for 360° views. Take care when crossing the road.
Gertrude Valley Lookout
How long to spend here: 5 minutes
Parking: Small parking area

Top Tips: Look back down the valley rather than just towards the mountains to capture the scale of the landscape.
Hundred Falls

Milford Sound Walkway Lookout
How long to spend here: 30 minutes
Parking: Large public car park near the visitor terminal (parking fees apply). If you want to find the free parking spots, I will talk about them later in this post.
Walk to Viewpoint: Flat, easy waterfront walkway
Top Tips: Walk a little further along the foreshore to capture Mitre Peak reflected in the water. Watch out for the sandflies here!

Arriving at Milford Sound
Parking
The main visitor car parks are around a five-minute walk from the visitor centre at Milford Sound. Parking costs $10 per hour before 3 pm, so if you’re taking a cruise you’ll likely pay for around three hours.
If you want to stay at the free carpark, go to the ‘free parking’ spot on my interactive map. It will be a extra 5-10 minute walk to the Visitor Centre but worth it if you are on a tighter budget.
Facilities
There are toilets, a café and an Information Centre in the main Visitor Centre. This is also where you check-in for your cruise. Make sure you know the name of the cruise line you are going with before entering the building as there are lots of different cruise lines and the place can feel a little overwhelming.
Cruise Options
I personally prefer the smaller cruise boats because they can get much closer to the waterfalls than the larger vessels, making the experience feel much more intimate. I would therefore recommend going with Cruise Milford.

If you want a more adventurous option, go for a Kayak Tour. We didn’t do this but saw a tour departing just before our boat and it looked super cool!
Scenic Flights
You have two options if you want to view Milford Sound by air: a Helicopter Tour and Plane Ride. If you are really keen, you could do a combined flight + cruise tour. These activities are weather dependent but I saw taking off from the nearby airstrip on both my rainy and sunny Milford Cruise experiences! If we had the budget for this, we would have 100% done it! It is worth noting that most of the flights depart from Queenstown.

You can experience all four seasons in 1 day on your journey from Te Anau to Milford Sound so make sure to pack accordingly:

How long does it take to drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound? The drive takes around two hours without stopping, but you should allow at least 4-5 hours for photo stops and to give you plenty of time to check-in for your cruise.
Do I need to book a Milford Sound cruise in advance? Yes. Cruises regularly sell out during the summer months and school holidays, so booking at least three weeks ahead is recommended.
Is Milford Sound worth visiting despite the high risk of rain? Definitely! Rain creates countless waterfalls flowing down the cliffs and gives the fiord its iconic misty atmosphere. Many visitors actually prefer rainy days.
Is there fuel available at Milford Sound? No. The last fuel station before Milford Sound is in Te Anau, so fill up before leaving as the return journey is around 240 km.
Are there toilets along Milford Road? Very few. There are public toilets at several popular stops, but they can be spread out, so it’s worth using them whenever you have the chance.
Is there mobile phone reception on the drive? Reception is limited once you leave Te Anau, with many parts of Milford Road having little or no signal. Download maps (maps.me)and any tickets before setting off.
What is the best time of year to visit Milford Sound? Milford Sound is spectacular year-round. Summer offers longer daylight hours, while winter brings snow-capped mountains and fewer crowds.
Are sandflies really that bad? They can be, especially around Milford Sound and near the water. Pack insect repellent and consider wearing long sleeves if you’re spending time outdoors.
